Crime Rates Rise In U.S. For The First Time In 12 Years

According to a report put out by the FBI this past Monday, crime rates in the United States have risen. And what is most disturbing is these statistics include violent crime rates which have gone up for the first time in 12 years. From 2005 to 2006 robberies rose 7.2% while in the same time period murders rose 1.8%.

The report puts forth a new challenge for the Bush administration, which of course has faced increased criticism from the Democratic congress. The criticism stems from cuts the Bush administration has made in federal assistance to local law enforcement agencies over the last 6 years.

An anti-crime package proposed by the Justice Department this year sets new minimum sentences, establishes stronger penalties for violations of firearms and widens conspiracy laws that will make for easier prosecution of violent gang members.
