OJ Back In Crime News

crime newsOJ Simpson, you may have heard of him. Although one juror who was just picked to sit on his new robbery - kidnapping trial claims she has never heard of him. Anyway, he's back in the crime news with his Las Vegas trial getting started today. But it is not without the drama. One of the witnesses, Bruce Fromong, who was on the witness stand for several hours today, pointed to his chest and indicated he was not feeling well. He may have cause to worry, since Fromong has claimed to have had 4 heart attacks in the past. He sat in the hallway with a cold compress on the back of his neck and an ambulance was called but I haven't heard if he was taken away or if the trial resumed.

L.A. Times Crime News From The 50's

crime newsAn interesting site is latimesblog.com where you will find old crime news from the 50's and earlier. It really is a fascinating site to pour over. Everything from petty theft to robberies, kidnappings, murder and more is in there and documented. Clippings from the L.A. Times from long ago recall stories and crime news such as a family who were held captive for days, Charles Schultz's comic strips featuring grown ups, an unarmed Atom bomb falling on a house in Florence, South Carolina to an ad for Mandrake pills for "heartburn, flatulency, giddiness and nausea." This is one place where you can compare crime of yesterday to today and see how it stacks up. It's good for a laugh and intrique.

Crime News - FBI Money Cut For Fighting Crime

crime news
President Bush's 2009 budget simply doesn't have the money to support the FBI criminal program fighting bank robberies, mortgage fraud or white collar crimes. This cut by Bush has left the FBI division fighting those crimes handicapped. The FBI team that fought the white collar crimes in the past has been cut by 1,700 people less than pre-9/11 days. Where is the money and man power going? To fight terroism apparently. What a disgrace that these crimes are going unpunished and that 2,400 FBI agents were misplaced to fight terroism after 9/11 but have not been replaced or directed back to their original jobs since. While we want to keep America safe, I am not sure the spying efforts and such are the way to protect us and where the funds should go.

Reporter Attacked Covering Crime News

A reporter in South Carolina suddenly became crime news herself after she was attacked by family members of an accused murderer. The reporter, Charmayne Brown, a black woman, was standing on a public street when female family members of the accused murderer rushed up to her and started swinging. This happened after she had been verbally assaulted for many minutes before.

Her cameraman had already put his camera away and rushed to try and help her. The attack was captured on film by another television camera crew.

The attackers were relatives of the murderer as well as the victim. Michael Shane Howell, 33, is accused of killing his grandfather, 73 year old Tommy Howell.

Police Brutality In Crime News

Just when I thought I had seen it all after last week viewing the paraplegic being dumped from his wheelchair while being booked into a Florida jail I have to admit this video left me more dumbfounded than ever.

True, the woman in the Shreveport, LA jail was drunk and belligerent but come on this is police brutality in the first degree! The crime news here is all the offenses this cop has committed. Covering the video camera and turning off the sound we are left wondering for a moment what is going on until the camera is back on. My mouth dropped as I saw the woman's limp and near lifeless body fall onto the floor. She literally had the crap beat out of her as she lay near a large pool of blood.

What the heck is going on with our police officers these days when they think this is ok to do to someone? There are plenty of true criminals out there that probably do deserve a beating like this. But wait, that might not be fair game now would it? First, the tough criminal wouldn't have his hands cuffed behind his back and second it would probably be a man! Way to scary for some big, bad police officer to take on.

Top Crime News - Military Prosecutors Seek Death For 9/11 Suspects

crime newsOk, so it's a little after the fact but I guess you could say better late than never, right? What I'm talking about is the Pentagon announcing today that they will go after the six men detained at Guantanamo Bay for conspiring against the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001. The charges against them are murder and war crimes, in all 169 overt acts. And yes, they are asking for the death penalty.

They are six men including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed. The other men are Walid Bin Attash, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, Mustafa Ahmed al-Hawsawi and Mohammed al-Qahtani. And after six and 1/2 years of the horrible acts of 9/11 and the 19 alleged Arab hijackers that were responsible the U.S. government is taking further action in finally charging these men.

My question is, why have they waited so long to do so? Whatever the reason, surely there will be controversy involved in these cases with waterboarding issues being brought up and the issue of Guantanamo Bay itself.

More Crime News On Prescription Drug Mix Ups

crime newsA headline today on msn.com was titled Drug Name Mix Ups Getting Worse. In the article was cited several cases of prescription drug mix ups.

One where a child went to the emergency room for asthma seeking the allergy drug Zyrtec and instead got the schizophrenia drug Zyprexa. And another where a patient was given the bipolar drug Laictal instead of the Labetalol for high blood pressure.

When Dr. Julius Pham discovered a critical error of one of his patients he said, "If you have ever had that sinking feeling that drops to the bottom of your stomach, I had it."

His critically ill heart patient was given an antibiotic instead of a blood pressure drug, and he didn't make it.

And many of you have heard of the actor Dennis Quaid's twin babies being given massive amounts of the blood thinner Heparin because of a label mix up.

Drug mix-ups have more than doubled since 2004 with 1.4 % of the errors resulting in patient harm.

In the article some suggestions were made for solving the problem such as pharmacies separating and differentiating easily confused drugs and labeling some drugs with capital letters in part of the names. Also doctors could write on the prescriptions what each drug was for.

The prescription drug mix up is all crime news to me.

Over Prescribing Meds - The New Crime News

crime newsWith the death last year of Anna Nicole Smith and now Heath Ledger of most likely prescription medications, is the new crime news going to be the doctors who over prescribe these medications?

Just how safe are the drugs we are taking? Many believe that if your doctor prescribed them, then they are sure to be safe. So wrong. Often times one doctor will prescribe one medication (or several), and another will prescribe something else, and the next thing you know you are putting a very dangerous combination of substances in your body.

I know because this happened to my father. One doctor prescribed a cortisone inhaler for a lung problem and even though my father had told him he had been on the blood thinning drug Coumadin for years, he gave it to him anyway. My father essentially 'bled out' suffering a massive hematoma in his lower back that resulted in the paralization of one leg.

This is just one example of what can happen, Anna Nicole Smith and Heath Ledger are another example - death. Some are speculating Ledger may have combined prescription sleep medications with over the counter ones, resulting in his death.

What can be done to control the over use and over prescribing of medications that can have lasting and deadly consequences? Here is one book you might want to read.

Crime News - Is It Time To Change The Manner Of Execution For The Death Penalty?

crime newsRight now in all 50 states the manners of execution are as follows; electrocution, lethal gas, lethal injection and in 1 - 3 states there is still hanging and the firing squad. By far the most popular method of execution is lethal injection.

What got me writing about this subject today is a story I saw on CNN this morning. They are now questioning (as they did in the past with electrocution and gas) if the cocktail of deadly drugs they now give inmates is cruel and unusual punishment that should be abolished. Cited was past examples of death row inmates that were laid out on the gurney and prepared to die (after first going to sleep by the first injection) but things went horribly wrong. It took one man one and a half hours to die instead of the normal 10 - 15 minutes. And they say that it goes very wrong more often than not.

CNN interviewed the doctor that actually came up with the deadly cocktail of drugs in the 80's that is now used today and he agreed that the method should be looked into for change. But what astonished me most was his final answer for a solution to the problem. He actually suggested we bring back the guillotine! I found it absurd that someone in this day and age would actually bring us back to the middle ages and suggest such a thing. The good doctor says, "It's final and it's quick, so it's a good method."

Oh give me a break! Yeah, let's just go cut people's head off. I don't think so plus I am sure cruel and unusual punishment arguments could be brought up over this method as well since surely you have heard that it is highly suspect that most beheading victims do not die right away and may even be cognizant for up to a minute.

The U.S. Supreme Court will take up this thorny issue today.

What is your thoughts on this matter of crime news?
