Unsolved Murders Have New Lead

unsolved murdersDetectives investigating the murder of Chapel Hill, North Carolina resident and student body president college student Eve Carson have a new lead in the case. A man using her ATM card was photographed in two surveillance photos at the ATM machine in Chapel Hill but police would not say exactly when the pictures were taken. The man in the photos is wearing a baseball cap with a large star on the front and a hooded sweatshirt.

Eve Carson's body was found in the street after neighbors heard shots around 5:00 am. She had been shot several times, once in the right temple.

Just 500 miles away another Southern college student, Lauren Birk, a freshman at Auburn University was found shot to death off campus. Her car was later found on campus engulfed in flames.

Although police are hesitant to say the two crimes are connected there may be a link in these tragic, unsolved murders.

Some Unsolved Murders You May Not Have Heard About

unsolved murdersEvery day you hear about more young women missing across the country to the point where cable and local news channels are saturated with the stories. CBS has a program called 48 Hours Unsolved Mystery where they showcase murders and unsolved crime. We have all heard of Stacey Peterson, Natalie Holloway, Brianna Dennison and Jesse Davis. Here are some unsolved murders you may not have heard about across the country.

Molly Bish disappeared on June 27, 2000 from the town of Warren, Mass. Molly had been given a ride from her mother to a local swimming pond where Molly worked as a lifeguard. Her mother said goodbye and the next person that showed up 20 minutes later found that Molly was missing. Although some clothing items of Molly's have been found her body has not.

The remains of Swedish nanny Karina Holmer from Dover MA were found in a dumpster on June 23, 1996. Her torso was cut in two and the upper part stuffed in a garbage bag and thrown in a dumpster. Her lower half or her killer have never been found.

The last time anyone spoke to newscaster Jennifer Servo, a 22 yr. old from Abilene, TX was on September 16, 2002. When her friends arrived at her apartment the next day to check on her they found her body on the bathroom floor. She had internal bruising, there were signs of strangulation and sexual assault and she had been hit on the head with a blunt object.

According to the National Crime Survey Report, homicide is the number 2 cause of death for persons aged 15 - 24.

The Biggest Unsolved Murders Case Of All Time

unsolved murdersThe biggest unsolved murders case of all time would have to be Jack the Ripper of course. And in the 120 years since someone murdered at least 5 prostitutes in the White Chapel area of London there have been numerous books, movies and TV specials documenting the case.

Everyone from "Ripperologists" to famed author Pat Cornwall has studied the case and come up with their own conclusions. Why does this still fascinate us after all these years? It is hard to say exactly but it has to do with the time period, the fact that he is the first documented serial killer, the manner and gruesomness of the killings and just the element of not knowing. We all love a mystery and this is by far the most mysterious unsolved murders case.

Unlike serial killers Ted Bundy, Son of Sam or John Wayne Gacy who were ordinary citizens more or less, Jack the Ripper lists of suspects is long with some very notable names on it. They include James Maybrick, Walter Sickert, Francis Tumblety, George Chapman, Aaron Kosminski, Montague John Druitt, Michael Ostrog, Prince Albert Victor, Dr. Thomas Neil Cream and Queen Victoria's personal physician Sir William Gull to name just a few.

I have read many books on the subject of Jack the Ripper and I have to say I think Pat Cornwall has come closest to digging up real evidence. She names the famous painter Walter Sickert as being Jack the Ripper and it sure looks like a good posibility to me. This is a picture of Sickert looking quite menacing.

Keeping The Unsolved Murder Cases Alive

unsolved murdersA murder that has been unsolved for more than a year is typically considered a cold case. Most police departments have cold case detectives that take over these unsolved murder files and try to find new clues and evidence that will re-open the case and very hopefully lead to an arrest.

Unfortunately there are many cold case unsolved murders that go on for years, get pushed to the wayside and sometimes forgotten about altogether. What can keep these unsolved murder cases from sitting in a pile and collecting dust? A dogged detective usually that is persistent and determined but also family members. They are truly the ones who will keep these cases alive.

If you are a family member or even a friend of a murder victim who's case has gone unsolved, check in with the police, ask questions and even call in with new information if you have any on a regular basis. Any time you do, you will keep your case at the top of the file and in the detectives minds the most.
