If you ask some experts the question "do you think cameras deter or prevent crime," you might get a resounding "no." More and more criminal experts are refuting the idea that crime cameras actually work.

When cities and businesses need the cameras to work, they often fall short. For example, New Orleans has installed cameras throughout the city to catch criminals in the act.

However, city residents and city council members were outraged when a shooting took place and the crime camera that should have caught it all was not rolling at the time.

Firefighters Help Prevent Crime in Schools

A new experiment has firefighters collaborating with local and federal authorities to assume a new role. The purpose of the experiment is to see if firefighters help prevent crime in schools.

One school has already tried the experiment. Garfield Middle School theorized that any uniformed presence can help deter crime, and firefighters are no exception.

So far, the plan has worked. After stationing uniformed firefighters throughout the school during regular hours, school crime has dropped substantially.

The results are encouraging and may lead other schools to recruit local firefighters to patrol school grounds to help contain violence and other criminal activity. Firefighters often have down time on their shifts, so the school patrol allows them to make the most of their time on duty.

The United Kingdom appears to be succeeding in its efforts to stop knife crime. A new report indicates that the number of offenders jailed for knife crime is up by 23 percent over the past year.

The rising number of people jailed for knife crime is a reflection of the UK's commitment to carry out full punishments for those caught illegally carrying a knife. The police have been giving fewer warnings and more sentences.

The same report showed that the average sentence length also increased over the past year. The average sentence for knife crime is now 38 percent longer.

"It is crucial that everyone feels safe when they walk around our towns and cities," said the UK's justice secretary, Jack Straw. "That is why we have clamped down on thugs who carry knives and doubled the longest jail term available."

While some view guns as contributors to violent crime, others hold the opinion that more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens actually deter violent criminals.

In fact, John R. Lott, Jr., a scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, has written a book about how guns stop crime. The book is called More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws.

Mr. Lott contends that criminals are most effectively deterred by higher penalties. Those penalties can include getting shot or killed by a law-abiding citizen with a gun.

Lott points to the statistic that for every additional year that a concealed-weapons permit law remains in effect, the murder rate drops by three percent. Likewise, rapes and robberies decrease by two percent.

Police forces across the country are giving rave reviews of a new gun to prevent crime. The gun is an otherwise normal Taser, or stun gun, but it has special recording equipment in the handle.

The handles of these Taser guns have small video cameras built in. The handles can then record criminal incidents for review.

The camera-equipped Tasers cost about $1,500, which is paltry in comparison to the cameras that rest on most police car dashboards. Dashboard cameras cost about $5,000, so the Taser is actually cheaper.

Some police departments have already adopted the camera-equipped Tasers with positive results. The footage captured helps defend the police officer's actions and can be used in court against the defendant.

Security cameras are ubiquitous these days, appearing in everything from department stores to video rental stores. But do cameras prevent crime substantially?

Although it is generally accepted that cameras are a deterrent to crime, more research exists on whether cameras reduce crime. The answer to that question, based on the results of surveillance systems in major cities, seems to be yes.

For example, when the Chicago Police Department (CPD) installed a Web-based surveillance program in February of 2006, the cameras helped police make 1,200 arrests in a year-and-a-half time period.

"Our preliminary research shows that they are effective, especially left in places for over 180 days," explained Jonathan Lewin, the commander of the CPD's information services. Crime Stop - Want to help stop crime in your area? Colorado Springs has a good idea they created to help the fight against crime. Their website is called Crime Stoppers. If there is an unsolved crime in the area, this website is notified and puts up information regarding the matter.

There is also a link where you can look at photos of criminals who have not been caught yet that are taken by security cameras. If you know any information regarding the person or people involved in the crime in the photos, you are to call the hotline provided on the site.
